J.D. Institute was established in 2005.

J.D. Institute is a public intellectual institute (space). The Institute was established out of a need to mentor and assist individuals in the areas of critical thinking, reading and writing, particularly in the context of social and cultural engagement from a biblical and theological perspective. These highly valued skills are taught through various course modules which include a number of biblical and theological courses, workshops and tours. J.D. Institute also offers a fellows program for aspiring seminary students, ministers and religious leaders.

J.D. Institute provides supplementary training at all levels, which is competitive with most higher academic institutions. The institute is lead by Dr. Jamal-Dominique Hopkins, who earned his Ph.D. at the University of Manchester in England after earning degrees at both Howard University in Washington, D.C. and Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Courses and meeting sessions gather once a week in a relaxed environment, usually in the evenings.

J.D. Institute also holds public lectures and seminars and provides consultancy services in church growth/development and theological advancement. The Institute also holds annual lectureship series which features the brightest and best intellectuals in the surrounding community. Various current topics are discussed which also may be presented as an open forum.
