J. D. Institute is a public intellectual institute committed to providing education in the area of social and cultural thought from a biblical perspective. Programs are designed to address modern social and cultural concerns (domestic abuse, stem-cell research, the economy, housing, jobs, poverty, crime, public policy, same sex marriage, etc) and educate the public in the area of biblical thought, primarily from a historical and pragmatic theological orientation. The Institute is non-denominational and is not affiliated with a particular religious body or denominational association. The philosophy of the Institute is in harmony with Judeo-Christian ethics and social justice values. Programs at the institute take serious the life of the mind and the preservation of the body in light of the biblical notion of sanctification. Programs address modern social and cultural concerns with biblical-theological insight. Programs are in the form of workshops, day-long or weekend seminars, symposiums, lectures (The Talented Tenth Lectureship Series) and courses. Past programs have included a course entitled Discovering and Exploring the Black Presence in the Bible, as well as a workshop and lecture on Understanding the Dead Sea Scrolls. Understanding the Dead Sea Scrolls was a lecture which also featured a tour of the actual Dead Sea Scrolls and related archaeological evidence (ancient pottery, coins and inkwells), that took place in November and December (2007) at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Donations helped to fund costs for seminar resources and exhibit (several secondary school children were able to attend - see workshop link).
Donations also have funded programs like the Institute's Azusa Society lecture and forum on Black Churches in the Age of Obama: The Post-Secular Turn in Black Political Thought (April 2009), featuring Reverend Eugene F. Rivers 3d, Senior Policy Adviser for the Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ, Director of the National Ten Point Coalition, Pastor of the Azusa Christian Community in Dorchester, MA and MSNBC Political Analyst; and Professor Michael Leo Owens, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Emory University and author of God and Government in the Ghetto (University of Chicago Press, 2007). Donations helped to offset cost for seminary students from the Atlanta University Center and other area Colleges to attend a private dinner.
J.D.Institute is a for profit organization which uses donations for guest speaker's travel and accommodations, event refreshments, fees for participants to visit museums and special exhibits, and for workshop literature and resources. Donations allow students and participants from the public to take part in educational programs not normally available to them. Donors will receive information outlining where and how their contributions have been used, and a special thank you gift from the Institute.
